AARP is a non-profit membership association of 34 million people open to persons 50 years of age and over. Members automatically receive colorful, entertaining bimonthly magazines, as well as monthly news bulletins detailing recent legislation and benefits pertaining to older persons.

AARP members can take advantage of travel discounts, a mail order pharmacy service, quality credit cards and life, auto, homeowners and mobile home insurance. Members also have the opportunity to enroll in group health insurance.

AARP is very involved in federal and state legislation pertaining to older person. In addition, AARP sponsors programs such as driver education courses, financial planning seminars and assistance with income tax returns.

Local chapters meet monthly and have special programs on their agenda. Any AARP member is welcome to attend. Guest speakers on various topics pertaining to older persons are presented at various meetings. For information on the AARP chapter closest to you, call the AARP Michigan State Office.

The Michigan State Office of AARP is the home base of eleven professional staff members and more than 150 volunteer leaders who collaboratively pursue the Association's program and advocacy goals in the State Capitol and in communities throughout the state.

Services: Coordinates the Michigan Senior Advocates Council. Provides advocacy on behalf of senior citizens concerning pending or proposed legislation. Publishes newsletter Aging Alert monthly, September-June, on state and federal legislation affecting the elderly.

Eligibility: Interested persons can receive a newsletter.

Cost: Available on subscription basis: $12 individual or $24 business or seniors can make a donation of any amount.

GREATER LANSING NATIONAL CAUCUS ON BLACK AGED (NCBA)

Hours: Meetings held the 3rd Monday of month at 12:00 noon at Letts Center, 1220 W. Kalamazoo, Lansing.

Services: The goal of the NCBA is to enhance the well-being of older adults, especially minorities. The Chapter is a multi-racial membership organization devoted to improving the daily existence and economic status of older persons. Activities include outreach efforts, guest speakers and fundraisers.

Eligibility: Interested persons or organizations, no restrictions.

Cost: $15.00 yearly membership fee for seniors.


MICHIGAN SENIOR ADVOCATES COUNCIL

Services: Michigan Senior Advocates Council (MSAC) members are appointed by Area Agencies on Aging. MSAC meets the 4th Wednesday of each month to study legislation concerning senior citizens and to take action. MSAC delegates spend approximately 20 hours per month on advocacy related tasks.

Eligibility: Any interested person.

Cost: None.

Hours:  Meets 3rd Tuesday of every month at 3:00 p.m.at Meridian Township Senior Center on Kinawa Drive in Okemos.

Services: Consists of a three-way effort among the Sheriff, local Chiefs of Police, Seniors and local community agencies working together to reduce the criminal victimization of and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to older citizens. Purpose is to develop and implement useful crime prevention and educational programs for older community members. Triad projects include: File of Life; 911 cell phones; No seniors without Christmas; Elder Abuse Recognition and Reporting; Home Security Checks; Victim assistance; Senior Save a Life day; senior volunteers and scams, Schemes and Swindles.

Hours: Regular monthly meetings scheduled on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Services: Seniors representing Clinton, Eaton & Ingham counties and the cities of Lansing and East Lansing and agencies who serve seniors meet to advise the Tri-County Aging Consortium Administrative Board and advocate to improve the lives of older adults and their families.

Eligibility: Membership by appointment. Public attendance and comments welcomed and encouraged. Call Tri-County Office on Aging staff for more information.
