Services: Trained volunteers will come into the home for up to four hours a week to relieve full-time caregivers.  Friendly Visiting is a component of Capital Area Interfaith Respite (CAIR), CAIR volunteers provide in-home companionship and support to our area seniors. CAIR will become companions and another set of "eyes and ears" for an alone, isolated senior. Current friendly visitors have helped area seniors by engaging in: helping navigate the internet, assist in planting a garden, driving a senior to the grocery store. By being a companion and assisting an elder in household tasks, the CAIR program can help bring friendship and assist a senior remain as independent as possible in their own home. Seniors are matched with a community volunteer.

Eligibility: Caregivers needing respite or relief, who have full-time responsibility for care of dependent individuals ages 18 and older. Call for more information. Criteria for Friendly Visitor:

Low income (125% of federal poverty guidelines); senior (age 60 and up); physically frail; lives alone and homebound; limited family supports; reside in Clinton, Eaton or Ingham Counties.

Services: Hospice of Lansing (HOL) is a non-profit, independent community supported program dedicated to meeting the needs of the terminally ill and their families at home. HOL uses a multi-disciplinary approach to coordinate medical, nursing, social work and spiritual and volunteer support services to clients and their families. Through the provision of these services, HOL enables each family to maintain the patient at home, where he/she may leave life as she/he entered it - surrounded by family and love. The primary goal of all HOL services is control of pain and other symptoms, to free the patient and family to live each day as fully as possible. Hospice is licensed by the State of Michigan and certified by Medicare/Medicaid. Bereavement services are provided for 13 months following death. Bereavement support extends to anyone in the community who has suffered a loss. An employer/employee bereavement program "Grief in the workplace" is available to any business, group or organization.

Eligibility: Terminally ill in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Ionia and Shiawasse Counties.
