Services: This is not strictly an employment program, but is a "paid" volunteer program in which a non-taxable stipend, $2.65 per hour, (designed to cover expenses). Foster Grandparents establish a one to one relationship with a child, spending time with that child. Transportation or reimbursement for transportation and other benefits is provided.

Eligibility: Unemployed persons age 60 or over who are low-income (125% poverty level) and live in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton or Livingston Counties.

Cost: None.


   

SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM (SCP)

Hours: 8:030 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Services: This is not strictly an employment program, but is a "paid" volunteer program in which a non-taxable stipend, $2.65 per hour for 20 hours each week, is paid to the senior volunteer to cover expenses. Senior Companions are assigned to older adults with special problems and develop a one-to-one relationship on a regular basis. Placement sites may be home settings, adult day centers, nursing homes or adult foster care homes. Transportation assistance or reimbursement is provided, as well as other benefits, including training.

Eligibility: Volunteers are unemployed persons age 60 and over living in the tri-county area who meet low-income guidelines. Client referrals must be through Senior Companion Program's contact agencies. Call for more information.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

Services: Provides part-time temporary work experiences to older workers. Emphasis of the program is to upgrade the employability of the older worker. A variety of positions and training are available. Workshop topics include resume writing, filling out applications, using cover letters, development of job leads, assessment skills and job retention.

Eligibility: Must be 55 years of age or older and reside in Clinton, Ingham, Jackson & other Counties and meet income eligibility criteria. Call for details.

Cost: All services are free.
